Hockey club forges ahead
(By
KEVIN TUTTY)
Linwood United, the youngest hockey club in Christchurch, has been extremely active in its 10 short years, and this season 'will open its own clubrooms and become the first senior club in Christchurch to do so. Linwood broke new ground in Canterbury hockey last year when, as the Linwood Old Boys club, it combined with Linwood Old Girls to form the first mixed club in Christchurch. The club has received great assistance from Linwood High School and it
is at Edmonds Park, adjacent to the school, that the clubrooms are being built.
I’he building will be of llOOsq. ft and was one of the prefabricated offices used during the Commonwealth Games. It is being redecorated with the help of voluntary labour, and By the time it is ready for occupation it will have cost the club about $7500 — cheap premises by today’s prices.
Money for the project has been raised by floating of a debenture loan among members, and boosted by regular hotel raffles. The club has tu’O training grounds at the park and it intends to upgrade them in the next two years by resowing and installing a new drainage system.
There were five men’s and three women’s teams in the club last year, and officials expect an extra men's team this year.
