WRONG BIRDIE
Birdies are commonplace when the Woodward Cup goiters gather for the senior inter-club competition, but there was one more remarkable than the rest in the third round at Rangiora recently. The Russley No. 4, Barry Petherick, was responsible for the feat — and he was carrying the evidence. In the early part of his match against Colin Johnson (Avondale), Petherick’s high wedge shot struck a sparrow in full flight, killing it instantly.
It was not the kind of birdie Petherick was looking for, but he continued undeterred and beat Johnson at the fourteenth. Russley, the Woodward Cup champion, beat Avondale, 7-1, and is unbeaten after three rounds.
