Prams checked for safety
Many prams were re-: turned to Christchurch retailers and manufacturers yesterday to < have their handles ; checked and fitted with [ safety devices. Some of the prams had potentially dangerous coi-;] lapsible handles, and were in! 1 very poor repair. A young Samoan girl died], [in Christchurch recently, , [when she was suffocated' I after being caught in the 11 [handle of a collapsible carry- ' t cot pram. I The managing-director of;jOxley Prams. Ltd (Mr M. E., ! Snowdon), said that his comIparty had had many prams;! [returned and had fitted safetj [devices to them. Whether the. ! prams were made by his 'company or not. safety de- ■
vices would lie fitted, he said. Mr Snowdon said many of ■ the prams were in very poor; condition. One was brought in 1 with one of the rings on the: handle missing, adding to the ] danger. Mr G. Strachan, of Nurserytown, was also concerned [ jabout the condition of some] | prams. “People remember to i grease and oil their cars, but] lit would appear that pramsdo not matter.” he said. His retail store was so I busy yesterday that it ran [out of safety devices, and; 'had to order more from Dun- 1 [edin and Auckland. [ Mr Strachan urged people [ [to bring in their prams to] [have them checked. He said; iit was the responsibility of] 'manufacturers to provide the! safety devices free to retail-; !' ers.
