Bowls title to Waikato
(N.Z. Press Association) MASTERTON.
World singles champion, Mrs E. Wilkie (Waikato), won a rubber match with Mrs I. Foote (Thames Valley) to take the national champion of champions women’s bowls title at the Masterton Club’s greens yesterday.
In a battle of world champions — Mrs Foote was in successful New Zealand teams at the last world championships — Mrs Wilkie won the final 18-13. The score was perhaps not a true indication of an absorbing and tight game. Mrs Wilkie got the breaks in the last three ends to come through. It was the third meeting of the pair in the tournament. Mrs Wilkie won the first game and Mrs Foote took a life off her yesterdav before they met again in the final.
A prophetic Mrs Foote said before the final that the pair seemed to take turns in winning. Mrs Wilkie’s win in the final put the pair level in the Champion of Champions tourney. Each has now won the title three times. Results yesterday were.— Fifth round: S. Adams (Wellington) 15, P. Dymond (Taranaki) 13; J. Thodson (East Coast) 22, S. Cribb (Wa. nganui) 4: I. Foote (Thames Valley) 25, M. Parker (Wairarapa) 11. Sixth round: Thames Valley 15, E. Wilkie (Waikato) 13; East Coast 20, Taranaki 13. Semi-finals: Thames Valley 20, East Coast 11; Waikato 20, Wellington 15. Final: Waikato 18, Thames Valley 13.
