Okarito Forest
Sir, —The Opposition spokesman for the environment said the Okarito lagoon is the only nesting place for the white heron. There is no record of their ever nesting there. They have nested solely on the Waitangi-Roto. Having witnessed the support of our local member (Mr Blanchfield) for the Forest Service proposals, it is alarming that Mr Prebble states a Labour Government would have refused permission to log the south side of the Okarito River, when the north side is closer to the colony. Twenty-five years ago, Wallis Sawmills had a tramway down Roto Creek, and two log-haulers working on both sides within 2km of the heron colony. The old Coast road to Okarito crossed within half a mile, a flax-mill was just around the Bluff. As J. Dennehy says, these birds know about noise and industry. It is both naive and foolhardy to claim otherwise. —Yours, etC ” KEVIN O’REGAN. Whataroa, March 11, 1976.
