Americans stash millions
N Z Press AsSH—Copyright > ' WASHINGTON. Feb. 26. Several ■ I house ■ d million United States dollars arc : stashed under a hill so that surviving Americans will have a two-year supply of ' money if the country is devastated in nuclear war, the /‘Washington Post - ’ reports. About 700 million bank-; ' notes of various denominations lie in an atom-bomb- ' proof shelter under a hill near Culpeper. Virginia, 621 miles south of Washington, the newspaper says. The shelter has its own water supply, filtered air. and food to nourish 100 people for one month. The Federal Preparedness Agency, which plans civilian defence measures in case of a nuclear conflict. predicts that half of the population would survive a total war. But limited atomic war is . more likely, agency officials
forecast. Therefore' banks would need money so that business could resume even if the Government Bureau of Engraving and Priming were destroyed. The hill is well guarded, rhe newspaper says.
