Problem drinkers
Sir, — 1 should like to believe that potential alcoholics or proolem drinkers can be persuaded by “clinical psychology'' to become moderate, social consumers of our national drug, but your front-page headline should have been reserved for the results of successful research rather than for an airy-fairy theorv. Unfortunately, alcoholics appear to be born, not made, and the only attempt I snow of to produce moderation in alcoholics (by conditioning) was a failure, although it had the support of a well-stocked bar — illegal of course in a New Zealand hospital; but overseas psychologists, accepted here with easilyacquired 'doctorates” (although American M.D.s cannot practice heie), can get away with anything. I hope your staff will watch the progress of this sensational experiment, and report early on the results. — Yours, etc. ’’ VARIAN J. WILSON. February 24, 1976.
