Produce prices

Sir, — In his report onfruit and vegetable availability and prices today Mr McGoverne says that retailers are paying 40c to $1 a case for lettuces, “. . . which makes their wholesale price about 4c to 9c each.” He tells us in his penultimate paragraph that lettuces are retailing at about 25c to 29c each. This kind of marketing madness makes nonsense of attempts by trade unions to secure economic justice for their members, while the temptation to producers to resort to “shortage” tactics in order to secure a reasonable return is obvious. If this Government is serious about controlling inflation it could well spend some time on a close examination of the mechanics of mark-up in the fruit and vegetable in--dustry. — Yours, etc., JACK CORNHILL.
