Protected trees

Sir, —Notwithstanding the disturbing seriousness of the “ordinary” type of vandalism, committed with ever increasing frequency, this type of offence almost pales into insignificance compared with the “wilful or ignorant des-

truction” (Oxford) committed by some demolition contractors and their employers. The delightful little building in Merivale at 219 Papanui Road was transformed into a heap of rubble, and now the beautiful old walnut tree, which stood behind the building, has been felled. One was given to understand that the tree wa. protected, and therefore not to be cut down without a special permit. So, what happens now? Was a permit granted, or is so-called protection just so many fine words?—Yours, etc., H. HENNING-HANSEN. January 8, 1976.
