Engine checks by computer

A computerised device which will allow mechanics to diagnose the faults in an engine in minutes, and which will even issue written instructions on how to

go about repairs, will b< put on sale soon by a Brit ish company.

The computer is connected to an engine by various leads and sensors provided. or in the case of those models supplied with a built-in "diagnostic plug” (mainly late model Volkswagens) it can be connected to the system provided by the car-maker.

Tile computer in the device is programmed by using the appropriate tape cassette for the car model involved.

The device will then carry’ out 25 tests on the engine in less than 10 minutes -— and can be hooked up to more than one car at a time, so that several vehicles are tested at once.

The results of the tests and the instructions on putting right any faults are printed out on a special form. The machine is likely to be installed by some major garages, but it will also probably be used by some motoring organisations so that their members can have their cars tested before taking them to a garage for repair.
