Hailes retains title

George Hailes (Hastings) retained his men’s 1500 m title when the national roller-skating championships continued at Canterbury Court last evening, but his path was made easier by falls, which put his two main rivals out of the running.

Hailes was eventually a clear winner of both this race and the senior aggregate, by virtue of his three out of a possible four titles, but the total points would have been much closer had it not been for the falls.

Colin Birchall (Masterton), the clear winner of the second semi-final race, went over in the first few seconds of the final and never had a chance from then on. Stephen Carwell-Cooke (Manawatu), racing brilliantly, took the lead from the start but went over on his left leg and fell, with seven of the 15 laps to Ego.

“I’ve a bung leg and am j .having treatment but didn’t) 'take it today. The leg gavel ■out on the bend —1 was a bit, lover-confident, I think —and i I fell trying tc correct it.” said! [the disappointed 20-year-o!d[ Carwell-Cooke, the winner of} the fastest semi-final, after ■ the race. The highlight of the intermediate men’s 1500 m was a spectacular, crash that resulted from John Dugdale (Hawke's Bay! ar.d Murray Macarthy iHollerdrcmel tangling on the bend with just over a lap to go, but the rest of the field was already clear of these two. Barry Green (Hawke’s Bay Revue) led from Dugdale and Rodgers through much of the race but Rodgers shot to the front with three laps to go, and I stayed there to make sure of i >his second title of the chare-i | pionships.

Mark Urlich was an easy winner of the junior 800 m, but

the Wanganui speed skater, Gary Clarke, put up a great fight in the early stages and Urlich was unable to find a gap to get through until the fifth lap.

Joanne Cole (Mount Wellington) was untroubled to win the junior 800 m, and finished several yards clear of Lynette Easton (Levin), after leading throughout.

The tiny contingent from tha Upper Waitaki club had further successes to crow about back home after yesterday’s performances. Debbie Voyce, an attractive dark-haired girl, took both the women’s singles over-all and the pre-intermediate women's free skating titles after a polished performance

During the morning's events. Paul Coe (Mt Wellington), aged j 11, took a record off Alan Bensej mann (Levin) for the second ; time in a week with a time of 127.05ec in a juvenile boys 200 m semi-final. Spectators were treated to a spectacular exhibition of roller nockey in the final between Papatoetoe and Te Aroha with the pace fast and furious for the full 40 minutes. SLIGHT EDGE Papatoetoe had a slight edge during most of the game but the result was in doubt until its players crashed in three goals within two minutes in the dying stages to finish a deserved 7-3 winner. The undoubted star of the i winning side was the young fur-1 ward, Peter .Money, who played! a great r-dtackir.g game and IQs. four goals. ;.'i scored with! powerful driving shots whichgave the goalkeeper uc chance.' were a just reward.
