Child safety in cars

Sir. —As an Australian now? living in New Zealand, I am!i appalled at the careless atti-i tude I have observed to child! safety in cars. I find it very ■ rare to see a child or infant] safely secured in a moving! vehicle. The norm seems to; ibe hordes of children floating about the car. even sitting or] • standing unsecured on the! front seat. The “safety”; iseats I have seen simply hookover the back seat —a farce. •as thev could not hope to, hold after an impact of any | force. Child safety belts are ; i obviously not compulsory j here, and I am wondering whv not?—Yours, etc., J. ARCHIE. January 7, 1976.
