Resited bus stop annoys

A number of shopkeepers near the Avon Theatre in Worcester Street are concerned about the moving: of the bus stop from almost outside the theatre to about 25 yards closer to Cathedral Square. The main complaint has been the cluttering of doorways by passengers and luggage Luggage is a particular problem before the departures of the airport bus. While admitting that the present position might be exaggerated because of the holidays, business firms criticised the Christchurch Transport Board for not notifying them of the resiling of the bus stop beforehand. The board's traffic superintendent (Mr J. Shankiand) said yesterday he was unaware of any formal com plaint from the affected firms. The stop was resited, with the authority of the Christchurch City Council, after representations over .several months by the manager of rhe Avon Theatre, said .Mr Shankiand. Three services depart from the 'top. which is where the old Rkcarton service used to leave from. These travel to Templeton. Wharenui. and to Christchurch Airport. Mr Shankiand said the services to Templeton and Wharenui were not very frequent. and the new bus service to the airport was introduced only on Monday. The likelihood of all three

i- services’ using the stop at -.the same time was likely to . occur only during the late 1 afternoon peak period, alii though the board was keepe ing an eye on possible I periods of congestion. i, Mr Shankland said if by the end of the month prob- ° lems remained then no doubt adjustments would be made.
