Race stars level
(N.Z Press Association) WELLINGTON Pet Hennan, of the United States, and Gregg Hansford, of Australia, remained level pegging after the third round of the Marlboro motor-cycle road-race series at Gracefield, near Wellington, yesterday. Hennen (Suzuki TR 750) and Hansford (Kawasaki H2R) each won one heat and came second in the other to remain as joint leaders in the series with 113 points as they head for the fourth round at Levels Raceway, Timaru, on January 4.
Approximately 10,000 spectators lined the streets of the 1.3-mile circuit in cold showery conditions as Hennen and Hansford lead the rest of the high-class international field at speeds of up to 150 m.p.h. through the two 15-lap heats. Hansford’s team-mate, Murray Sale, also mounted on a three-cylinder Kawasaki H2R, figured prominently in the results, taking a fifth place and a third to keep him third over-all in the series. The Christchurch riders, Stuart «Avant (Suzuki RG 500) and John Boote (Yamaha TZ 750) both fared better at Gracefield than in previous rounds, and finished well up in both heats. In the second round, at Wanganui on Saturday, Hennen starred with three wins which drew him level with Hansford.
