Play cut by rain
Rain severely affected play on the first day of the annual match for the Fitzgerald Sheild between the Wellington Mercantile League and the Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association, being played in Wellington, and only an hour of play was possible.
In the time available the Christchurch side did well to get to 68 while losing only Ray Hooper’s wicket for 11. The other opener, Bruce Malden, finished on 45 while the captain, John Ruston, had made 10 when play was finally called off at 3.40 p.m. ' Prospects are not good for today and a limited-over
(match is likely if play does get under way.
