GOLF Hoole has first big Chch win

Colin Hoole had his first big golf win since coming to Christchurch from Perth last April when he won the annual New Year ofi-hole tournament at Waitikiri by two strokes yesterday.

But the way he won, at the expense of the Canterbury Freyberg No. 2, Geoff Saunders. suggested further wins.

Hoole. aged 31. a quarter-; finalist in the Canterbury i match-play championship two) months ago, had three threeputts in his morning round of 74, but it was good enough to place him second, although five shots behind Saunders. I Saunders's four-under i round of 69 was the result lof steady placements, accurate chipping, and sound putting. Starting off No. 10 tee. he covered the back half in par 36. but returned in 33 (four under) with consecutive birdies at six, seven, and eight. The afternoon became one of match-play for Saunders. The Australian, playing in the same foursome, had whittled away his lead by) the twenty-sixth, mainly) through Saunders’s dropping' four shots on the front nine. 1 The Christchurch player: went one ahead again after I 28. but a birdie, par, birdie I ) burst at the next three holes gave Hoole a handy lead I which Saunders could not; (erase despite birdies at the) I thirty-second and thirty- | third.

Hoole's afternoon round i included an eagle at 13 from ’ four metres, and his only blemishes were one-overs at i 10 and 17, both a result of 1 three-putts. i
