A most expensive tariff
The Auckland-based penal reform group. Crimanon, says the Minister of Justice (Dr Finlay) told them that it took something near $lO,OOO a year to keep an offender in prison. Crimanons chairman, Mr R. Harris, said that this represented S2sm annually for all prisoners in New Zealand. "It would actually cost less to put someone up for a year in a single room at Auckland’s luxury InterContinental Hotel,” Mr Harris said. He said that Dr Finlay had told the group that he had hoped to carry out reforms in penal policy but that the new government might employ more “draconian measures.” The meeting with the Minister had convinced the group that there was a real r"“d for reform, Mr Harris E'aid.
