Miss Binning star of finals

Canterbury swimmers had a mixed day in the] national Speedo agegroup teleprinter finals at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday.

Canterbury succumbed to! the strength of Auckland mi the fight to decide the top! centre, but it had the satis-! faction of providing the star of the finals; setting seven of the nine meeting records; and having the top club in the country—Wharenui. Rickie Binning, a slight 11-year-old, was the star of the finals held at three pools — Auckland, Palmerston North, and Christchurch—simultaneously. In the girls 10 and 11 years; age-group, she won four of al possible five events — all in; record times—and was second' by a tenth of a second in the other race. Miss Binning also played a big part in taking her club, Wharenui, to a comfortable points lead over Kaikorai, of Otago. Canterbury won 14 of the 35 titles at stake—six more than Auckland — but the northern centre’s over-all strength carried it to a comfortable 86-point win on the new scoring system. Canterbury won every title in the girls 10 and 11 years age group and picked up two seconds and a third, but in comparison it could only gain one national placing—a third —in the boys nine years and under group. The final centre points totals were: Auckland 659. Canterbury 573, Otago 471, Wellington 425. Waikato 352. The top three clubs were: Wharenui 221, Kaikorai 203, ! Parnell 157. Last year Wellington sur- . prised by becoming the top centre in the country, but

just as surprisingly this year; it slipped back to fourth place, while Waikato also; lacked the strength it had a few seasons ago. There were some pleasing aspects however. Graeme Bird won Northland its first teleprinter title in the nine years and under 100 m breaststroke. The Northland centre was only formed last year. Previously it had been part of the Auckland centre. In the southern region finals at Christchurch there was a noticeable increase in the number of swimmers from the Eastern Districts centre, and' one, Nigel Cockcroft, gained a national third placing in the 12 and 13 years 100 m freestyle. There were nine meeting] records broken and two equalled! during the da.v. Four of them; were set bv Miss Binning, and; three others by Canterbury relay] teams. In her first event, the 100 m! freestyle. Miss Binning took' I.4sec’off the old record with a; new time of Imin 7.ssec. In the! next race she reduced the 100 m backstroke time by 2.9 see with a new mark of Imin 15.9 sec. Breaststroke is Miss Binning’s; best event and in the 100 m race she carved s.4see off her own record set last year. Her new! time of Imin 24.1 sec put her; inside the qualifying standard for' this year’s national champion-1 ships .at Dunedin in March. She! was 7.9 sec ahead of the next > swimmer. lona Condie I South-] land). Miss Binning’s fourth record; was in the 200 m individual; medley. She took l.Ssec off! Bronwyn Smith's old mark with; a new time. 2min 48.0 sec. In the JOOm butterfly Miss, Binning wak beaten by another' Canterbury girl, Sian Prior. Ai determined Miss Prior managed] to beat Miss Binning by a touch] after a thrilling race. Grant Gillard gave Canterbury Its only win in the boys’ 12 and | 13 years age group. He won the I 100 m backstroke by more than a] second, and in second equal place was another Canterbury swim-1 mer. Dean Robinson. Grant Forbes gave Canterbury; a title it did not expect in the] 10 and 11 years boys’ 100 m free-; style. Against a talented] southern region field Forbes! resisted all challengers and when] the national result was known] he had won by o.6sec from! Robert Perry (Hawke’s Bay-i Poverty Bay). Forbes had an excellent day.) He later won the 100 m breast-i stroke title, was second in the! 200 m individual medley and helped the Canterbury freestyle relay team to victory and a new! record. Saki Hannah (Otagoi also per-' formed well in this age group,] winning two titles and twice] being placed third in national! results. Stuart Duckworth, third In the: 100 m backstroke, was Canter-! bury’s only placing in the boys’! nine and under section. Lynette Griffiths (Canterbury); was only fourth qualifier in the southern region 100 m backstroke, (but she struck her best form to] jfinish first equal with the Auckland girl. Tracy Turnbull and Andrea 'Potts made it first and second for Canterbury In the girls’ 12 and 13 years 100 m breaststroke, and in the same section Marie Bishop (Canterbury) swam j strongly for second place nationally in the 100 m butterfly. The Canterbury 12 and 13 years medley relay team set a new record and Carol McDonald capped a good performance by the centre in that section taking third place In the 100 m freeI style.
