Aratika’s bill not settled
(X.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The Railways Department still has to work out the cost of repairs to the Aratika after, the fire during her delivery voyage 19 months ago. Nor is it known who will foot the bill when it is finial Iv added up. A spokesman for the [Minister of Railways (Mr [Bailey) said that no announcement would be made | about the size of the fire bill until a payer had been found. Negotiations are apparently continuing between the Railways, the ferry’s builders, and her insurers. The ferry spent nearly II weeks being repaired in Auckland after her arrival in New Zealand before she entered service across Cook Strait on September 4, 1974. The fire was said to have been started by fuel spilling on hot engine-room pipes. Mr Bailey said last week that world-wide tenders were being called to convert the 3879-tonne ferry from a railonly vessel to a passenger and car ferry.
