Rugby tour

Sir, — 1 would like to commend your paper for the thought-provoking editorial on sporting contacts with South Africa. As a long-time National supporter and one who voted Labour in 1972 because of my strong feelings against apartheid (everywhere) I feel compelled to oppose Mr Muldoon’s stand on South Africa. I have many times heard the statement “National for moral government”. In my opinion this is a moral issue; but the National Government prefers to see it as something which only concerns the Rugby Union. It appears that a game of Rugby is more important to smug, comfortable New Zealanders than equal opportunity for the black Africans. — Yours, etc., L. HICKMOTT. December 8, 1975.
