Gaol term appeal fails
(N:Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The Court of Appeal dismissed an appeal by a ! Christchurch man, Gordon Alexander Halliday, against a sentence of nine months imprisonment on two charges of causing another! person to take a poison with! : intent to cause inconven-! ience or annoyance. : The ground for the appeal! i! was that the sentence was! :! inappropriate. Halliday was also charged : I with attempting to cause a . person to take a poison with ; | the intent to cause inconvenience or annoyance. He was i found guilty by a jury on all ■ three charges. The Court comprised Mr ■ Justice McCarthy (President), Mr Justice Richmond, and Mr Justice Cooke. Mr D. H Stringer appeared for] Halliday and Mr N. William-; son for the Crown. Halliday had for some time been separated from his wife. The jury found that on May 5 he had placed some lead acetate in a sugar bowl at Mrs Halliday’s home. Satisfactory result The earnings of The Equitable Building and Investment Company of Wellington, Ltd, was satisfactory in the six months to September 30, compared with the corresponding period last year. However, a comparable result for the full year may depend on increased real estate transactions, the directors say. A steady interim ’ dividend of 5c a share (5 per cent) has been declared, pavable on December 18, ex dividend December 12.
