Wheat carting by new system
Wheat from Christchurch and North Canterbury districts will be moved to the North Island mills by a new arrangement this year. Wheat will be carted to a central point at Addington where it will be stored temporarily, before going north by rail in containers and rail waggons.
Parties concerned with the handling of the wheat crop met yesterday in Christchurch. Reprsentatives of the New Zealand Wheat Board and Federated Farmers, flourmillers, road transport operators, the railways department, and grain merchants were present. It is too early to predict the yield of the crop, but based on Ministry of Agriculture estimates of the area sown, and given the same yield per hectare as the last harvest, it could be close to satisfying New Zealand’s requirements. Both the Wheat Board and flourmillers expressed concern about the high incidence of taint in wheat from the last harvest. The meeting stressed the need for thorough cleaning and' chemical treatment of storage space by growers before the harvest to prevent this.
