Three Chch men to seek Olympics job
Christchurch will have at least three candidates for the position of assistant manager of the New Zealand team for the Montreal Olympic Games next July.
Nominations will not close until Sunday, but at mid-day yesterday the secretary of the New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (Mr G. Craig) had received nine names — an unusually high number.
The Christchurch men on the list are Messrs G. S. Brockert (swimming), J. Fielding (judo), and A. W. Barrett, who as well as being actively involved in both swimming and men’s basketball, is the executive director of the New Zealand Games Organising Committee and earlier served as executive secretary for the 1974 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee.
The other six are Messrs A. G. Haslett and M. E. Spackman (both cycling), B. Homblow (boxing). A. J. Husband (weight-lifting), J. D. Prestney (wrestling), and D. M. Taylor (athletics). They all live in the North Island.
Messrs Brockett, Haslett, and Prestney, who have all had Games managerial experience in recent years, were among the beaten candidates for the position of manager, a role which will be filled by Mr J. W. Holley (athletics), of Wellington. Another Christchurch man,
Mr M. R. Good (hockey), also sought the manager’s job, but he confirmed yesterday that he would not be a candidate for the deputy’s position. Of the newcomers, little is known of Mr Homblow, but the others are prominent in their respective sports. Mr Fielding was the judo section manager at the
Munich Olympics. Mr Husband was the weight-lifting manager at the Christchurch Commonwealth Games, Mr Spackman is the president and a former secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association, and Mr Taylor managed a New Zealand under-23 athletics team in Australia two years ago.
