Cathedral’s bells rung
Members of the Christchurch Cathedral Society of Bellringers were joined by bellringers from the First Church of Otago, Dunedin, in ringing the Cathedral bells during Labour weekend.
On Saturday morning, four Christchurch and four Dunedin ringers rang a quarter-peal of grandsire triples — 1372 changes in 53 minutes.
On Sunday afternoon, seven Christchurch and three Dunedin ringers rang a peal of grandsire caters. 5021 changes in three hours and 17 minutes. This was the first peal of caters rung in New Zealand.
The peal band was: treble, J. N. D. Savage; two, R. J. Stevens; three, M. M. Clayton; four, Mrs E. S. E. Wilson; five, P. J. Perry; six, R. G. T. Bennett; seven, N. F. E. Reeve; eight, C. H. Ward; nine, A. P. Whitehead (conductor); tenor, J. H. G. Gardner.
