John Reid new cricket selector

The former New Zealand cricket captain. John Reid, has returned to the national scene as a selector. He was appointed to the national selection panel b\ the Cricket Council’s board of control on Saturday in a unanimous decision.

The only other nominations for the three-man panel were the incumbents. Messrs F. J. Cameron and I. A. Colquhoun. However. Mr Reid is not convener of the panel, which some had expected in view of his seven years experience as a selector in the early 19605. Mr Cameron, for five years a member of the panel and thus its most experienced current member, was named convener. Mr W. A. Hadlee was reelected chairman of the board, and Mr D. Hazlett chairman of the Junior Advisory Board. The meeting was also told the junior board will again be sponsored, for $4500. by the Bank of New South Wales. A more restrictive agelimit has been imposed on the Rothmans tournament. It will still be for players under 23. but at January 31, *

They are •scheduled for the end of the tour on February 21 (Christchurch) and 22 (Auckland): and are subject to acceptance by the Indian board. Dates for second round ■ play-off matches in the Shell , series were fixed. They are i January 16 to 18, January 31-February 2. February 27- . 29 and March 5-7. Each association will play on two . of those four dates but firm • details cannot be worked out • until after the first round. • The final will be March 12- ! 15 ■ The national coach, Martin . Horton, will be sent to Fiji >ito conduct a clinic in February. The period suggested by Fijian administration was i February 1 to 6 — which tjdashes with New Zealand’s , second test against India — but the board will suggest changes to the dates and to • the format. Mr R. A. Vance emphasised the importance of helping Fijian cricket. "There are at the crossroads, if they are not already past them,” said Mr Vance.
