‘Chances for dialogue’

The Town and Country Planning Act allowed many chances for those with special interests to express their needs to local councils the Minister of Works and Development (Mr Connelly) said on Thursday. “I hope the Maori people and their representatives will use both the formal procedures and more informal occasions to put forward their points of view,” Mr Connelly said. He was commenting on the release of a special bulletin on planning for Maori needs, outlining the Government’s policy and formulated by Maori members of Parliament.

The bulletin recommended better communication between special-interest groups and local authorities responsible for planning for their needs, and this was essential, he said. Under the new legislation local authorities would be required to consider the provision of maraes and associated developments of Maori land when preparing or reviewing district schemes.
