Elizabeth Reid resigns

Ms Elizabeth Reid, the Australian Prime Minister’s Adviser on Women’s Affairs, announced her resignation in a brief statement issued in [Canberra. i She gave no reasons for the decision, except to say it had been taken after a great deal of consideration. Ms Reid said she would not be available for interviews or comment. Her resignation will take effect from December 5 and she will be on annual leave* until then. It had been reported in; Australian newspapers, prior to Ms Reid’s resignation, that the Prime Minister (Mr Whitlam) had been planning a reorganisation involving Federal Government policies on women. The expected move was believed to have caused anger among women’s groups. Ms Reid, who was be-1 lieved to have been in poor health. had complained; about the lack of co-oper-! ation from the press and the * bureaucracy within her own job.
