E.E.C. relaxes beef policy

The effect ' would be to increase j beef imports from nonMarket countries. : But informed sources said , the Irish Republic and West Germany were likely to pro-: ( test against the new regula- ( tions, which will take effect today. The sources said that the total E.E.C. beef intervention | stock stood this month at 245,000 tonnes, compared j with 270,000 tonnes a month . earlier. The Irish Republic (81,000 tonnes) and West; Germany (58,000 tonnes)! i carry the biggest interven- 1
ition stocks. Under the new regulation, I ; beef imports from non- : Market countries can be double E.E.C. exports. Previ-! ously, imports had to match | exports on a weight basis. The new rule should per-1 mit import certificates for up| to 50,000 tonnes in October - and a total of 90,000 tonnes I by the end of the year. The E.E.C. Commission also relaxed rules about boned beef destined for conversion into deboned meat. For every 100 kilograms i of exported boned beef, 80kg of deboned beef can now be imported, instead of 60kg under the old rule. The Commission regulation also will allow new permits i for importing 30.000 head of ■young cattle into the Comjmunity for fattening between I October 1 and December 31, '21,100 going to Italy.
