Surcharge likely
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The Union Steam Ship Company, Ltd, will probably have to introduce a bunker surcharge to cover the increased price of fuel oil. A company spokesman said in Wellington that the shipping industry was still awaiting the new marine-fuel prices. The Union Company might be forced to use heavy fuel oil in its motor-vessels in place of marine diesel, the spokesman said. Marine diesel fuel was more expensive, but it capsed less wear to engines than the heavy grade. With fuel oil becoming an increasingly important factor in running costs, ships might have to sail with nearcapacity loads whenever possible and reduce speed to [save fuel, the spokesman [said.
