Shotgun accident kills man
A man died of shotgun wounds to the head after an accident at his home in Merivale about 7.40 p.m. on Thursday. He was Alan Ernest Barrell, aged 52, of 138 Leinster Road. The accident happened when Mr Barrell returned home after being out shooting rabbits. The police believe he might have been taking his doublebarrelled shotgun out of the car when it accidentally discharged. He was found, by his family, lying beside the car. The door was open, and the weapon was on the passenger seat. The police say there were no suspicious circumstances. The gun was flown to Wellington yesterday for ballistic tests.
