S.I.S. man accused of assault
(.V.Z. Press Associefton) i WELLINGTON, Oct. 2. A complaint of as- ’ sault against a Security ! Intelligence Senice officer has been made to the Wellington police. The assault was alleged to have occurred today after the funeral of Dr W. B. Sutch. The officer—« witness in the Official Secrets Act trial of Dr Sutch earlier this year—was alleged to have attacked two men, Leslie Slater and Alister Taylor. Slater said he had laid a complaint at the Wellington central police station on the advice of Mr M. A. Bungay, one of the pallbearers at the funeral, and the lawyer who successfully defended Dr Sutch.
The police later confirmed that a complaint had been lodged and they were investigating. The S.I.S. officer was said to have been taking photographs at the funeral and was afterwards followed by Messrs Slater and Taylor. The assault was alleged to have occurred when they caught up with him. Afterwards, the two said, they went to Mr Bungay. Taylor had been fined for contempt of court after naming an S.I.S. witness at the Sutch trial whose name had been suppressed.
