Pre-election loud-hailers still limited
Christchurch residents will be spared an extra month of noise from electioneering loudspeakers. Yesterday, the City Council’s health and general committee refused an application from the Labour Party’s Christchurch Central branch to use loudspeakers from early in October. Sir Robert Macfarlane said it would be “far too early” to begin using loudspeakers in city streets.
“If you give it to one, you have to give it to all four parties,” Sir Robert said. Loudspeakers are allowed, without application, for a month preceding an election.
