Way cleared for T.A.B. trebles

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The Minister of internal Affairs. Mr May, yesterday announced new forms of on and off-course betting. These will be on and off-cou.rse trebles and off-course qulnellas. Treble betting will require a punter to pick the winning horse In three designated races and Indications were that large dividends would be realised from tliis form of betting, he said. The quinella, an integral feature of on-course betting, requires the punter to pick the first two horses in either order in any one race. “My decision to approve these new forms of betting results from Initial requests from the combined committee of the New Zealand Racing and Trotting Conferences to conduct an oncourse trebles totalisator and from the Totalisator Agency Board to conduct off-course trebles and quinella betting,” Mr May said. "These requests were submitted to the New Zealand Racing Authority for their recommendation, which I received late last week. The authority's recommendation was favourable to both requests. ON-COURSE TREBLES

“The Introduction of on-course trebles should be attractive to clubs, as existing totalisator machinery will be able to cater for this form of betting without any Involvement in additional capital costs for new tote machinery,” lie said “I expect that these new forms of betting will be of particular Interest to racing and trotting clubs in the West Coast of the South Island because these clubs lack the equipment to handle quinella and forecast betting. However, since they will soon be able to conduct trebles, this innovation will fill the longstanding gap that has separated the West Coast from other New Zealand clubs In respect of higher dividend bearing pools. ’’To enable the Industry to prepare itself for oneburse trebles betting. I have decided that this form of betting shall not commence before October 25. In addition, no on course treble shall commence until the last leg of an earlier treble has been run and there shall be a minimum Interval of one race between the last leg of one treble and the first leg of the next treble. For those clubs wishing to operate a slnmltancbus on-course and off-course treble, a minimum period of 70

minutes between each leg of the treble must be provided. ‘ln relation to off-course trebles betting, this shall not commence before October 14 and at the request of the To'talisator Agency Board only one offcourse treble will be operated for each day of racing and one off-course treble for each night ol racing. “My approval of off-course quinella betting Is in principle only and 1 will require the Totalisator Agency Board to submit to me their proposed quinella regulations when they are ready to introduce off-course quinella belting,” Mr May said.
