PETITION of SUPPORT Te Roopu Ote Matakite Maori Land March on Parliament October 13 1975 Titiro. Titiro. Titiro. Whakarongo. Whakarongo. Te karanga ate Roopu ote Matakite. t nga hau a who tautoko ngia tonei haere kite Poromata, mo nga tura a ngau nai ita whanua. The Maori land right* group, To Roopu Oto Matakite, hogan marching from Te Hapua to Wellington on September 14. The march promises to be one of the most significant event* of the decade and to the Maori people, it will be e climax to over a hundred and fifty year* of fru*tration and anger over the continuing alienation of their land*. Land mean* much more to the Maori people than it doe* to any other New Zeelander. To them it has a deep spiritual valua. You can realise then the frustration the Maori people have had over the last ISO years as they have soon their lands gradually fall out of their hands. Before the arrival of the European settlors, the Maori had 66 million acres of land, today they have les* than three million. MATAKITE is deeply concerned as it Sees more acts brought in by Parliament which continue this process of alienation. The Town & Country Planning Act, the Public Work* Act, the Rating Act, the Counties Amendment Act, thi 1950 Harbours Act and other* contribute to the eroding of Maori Reserves and should bo amended so a* to have no effect over Maori land. MATAKITE is pressing for the return of "Lake Hawea Maori Reserve" Otago, etc., and the abolition of monocultural laws pertaining to Maori land, and establish now laws for Maori land based on their own cultural values. Matakite wants to establish communal ownership of land within the tribe as a legitimate title equal in status to the individual title. We see noe difference between the aspirations of Maori people and tho desire of worker* in their struggle*. Wo seek the support of workers and organisations, as the only viable bodies which have sympathy and understanding of tho Maori people and their dosiro*. The people who are oppressing the worker* ere the same who are exploiting the Maori today.
