Local Bodies ‘need review’
(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, October 1. Local government should make a concerted effort to change its “Aunt Sally” image that paused many people to criticise, and berate it, Rlr T. F. Horne (Nelson), said in his presidential address to the annual conference of the South Island Local Bodies’ Association. The local bodies, he suggested, should combine to create, and build, a better image by a positive approach by informing the public of the real purpose of their elected representatives. “That is, to act on behalf of the people, and in their interest; that cities, boroughs and counties belong to the
people; and that it is in the interest of the people to adopt an attitude of pride and self-help in their own districts,” Mr Home said. “I know this is a two-way deal, but I believe that not enough action or endeavour is made by either party to alter the situation by getting i citizens, and their representatives, together to sit down and discuss their views.” Mr Home said that, at times, it seemed as if the same difference of opinion existed between the aims of local bodies, and of the Govi eminent. Instead of working in unison, local bodies were inclined to be ultra critical of the Government, especially if contrary or adverse opinions were expressed, or actions taken.
Closer unity between people, and their local bodies, and between the local bodies, and the Government, should be promoted by the association. -
