Cattle sale weak
I Prices ranged between two ' extremes when a special sale of yearling heifers was held at the Addington Market yesterday. As at weekly sales throughout the late winter and early spring, there was a useful demand for the well-grown, well-wintered heifers, but heifers which were a longer-term proposition for fattening were taken only at calf prices — and low prices at that. The sale drew a yarding of 1885 head, and the standard was good for this stage of the season. At no stage was the sale followed by a very large gallery, and although there have been reports of Southland wanting cattle, there was no apparent demand from that area yestert day. Buyers, as expected, showed a I distinct preference for heifers i which were a fattening proposition this season. These had aj reasonably consistent sale. A small selection of the best heifers reached $6O, and there were isolated sales of heifers in good killable condition to $77. Good heifers, however, sold mainly at $5O to $5B, average at $4O to $4B. and small to medium at $25 to $35. Many of the heifers which sold at $3O, more or less, were by no means poor. They were probably not a proposition for resale as fat in the current season and, accordingly, prospective buyers did not take the risk with them. For this type of heifer, one auctioneer described the sale as the worst he could remember. Anyone who had bought small heifer calves for wintering over
> and resale would have made : little or no margins. i Sales included.— A. F. S. Rutherford (Montrose), : 51 Angus-Hereford cross at $42.50i , to $62, 52 Angus at $32.50 to I ’ $60.50; C. W.
