Separate and new accounts

The chairman of the Meat Board (Mr C. Hilgendorf) said last evening that there would be separate stabilisation accounts for beef and sheepmeats. As the s3sm granted to the industry earlier in the year had been extinguished by the

payment of a dollar a head on lamb last season, and sup. port for beef, both accounts would start from scratch. Mr Hilgendorf said that the board would be represented on the price-setting committee by himself, and by the deputy-chairman, Mr A. M. Begg, if he was available. He did not know who the Government representatives would be, but traditionally they would include representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, and the Treasury. There has been considerable speculation about the sort of minimum price that will be set for lamb. There have been reports that Mr Moyle was wanting to see the price for the standard New Zealand lamb set at as high as $8.50 to $9, but he declined to confirm this in an interview with “The Press” last week. The Meat Board and farmer representatives favour setting prices closely related to the market, and the likelihood is that the price will be below $B, and probably between $7 and $7.50.
