Noted dancing teacher dies
One of New Zealand’s best known teachers of Scottish . and Irish national dancing. Miss Muriel Waugh, has died in Christchurch. Miss Waugh began teaching in 1920 and continued until shortly before her death. Her teacher was Mr Willie Sutherland, 10 times Scottish highland dancing champion. When the New Zealand Academy of Highland and
National Dancing was estab-j lished under the auspices of the Piping and Dancingj Association of New Zealand. 1 Miss Waugh advised on I standard techniques and examinations. She was appointed to the l academy’s technical comimittee and made a life memi’oer. Miss Waugh was also a [life member of the North Canterbury-West Coast i Centre of the Piping and 'Dancing Association. Shq ran a large school of I dancing which produced 'many champions and she was well known as a judge and examiner. She and her pupils gave concerts for Nazareth House and St Joseph’s Home during the Depression and she travelled by train to Ashburton regularly where she gave lessons for 1/9 per pupil. During the war years she and her pupils performed at many concerts. Miss Waugh was also a banjo player of note, and iplayed on 3YA radio programmes.
