Chase for goalscoring honours

A battle for individual goal-scoring honours in this season’s Rothmans National Soccer League will be fought out today in the final league match of the season between the 1975 Lion Chatham Cup rivals. Christchurch United and Blockhouse Bay.

Gary Paddison (Blocki house) is the pace-setter, [with 10 goals, one more than Norman Moran (United) and Sam Malcolmson (Stop Out), whose club has now finished its programme. Moran has been in a prolific scoring form recently, with four goals in his last three league games. It was thought at one stage that Moran would have no opposition from Paddison today. Reports indicated that Paddison and lan Ormond had been ordered by the Auckland F.A. not to play against United because they are in the provincial side to meet Indonesia on Sunday. But the Blockhouse coach, Bert Ormond, said last evening that both would play for the club.

“Bay comes first, as far as we are concerned, and the national league. Auckland has no right to stop them playing,” Ormond added. The only doubt in the Bayside, Ormond said, is Mike

Farac, who has not recovered from an injury he suffered in the cup final. United will have its manager, Terry Conley, changed and standing by as a substitute in case the team suffers a second injury. He has only enough players for one replacement. Three of the senior squad — Richard Wilson, Mark McNaughton, and Richard Mulligan — are in the New Zealand under 21 squad, which begins a North Island tour against Gisborne City tomorrow.

The other major ■ soccer matches today concern the Rothmans League play-off series, with Rangers away to the Northern League titleholder, Manurewa, and Wel--lin g t o n-Diamond United meeting Wellington City. Rangers, beaten 1-0 by W.D.U. last Saturday, cannot afford another defeat if they, are to sustain a strong challenge for the vacant place in the league next season. The relegated Wellington City opens its bid to remain in the competition, but will be hard pressed to hold W.D.U., to whom it lost, 1-4, in the Chatham Cup this season.
