Education and crime
Sir, — If V.. H. Anderson paused to think he might ' realise that, while reading disability might correlate I highly with delinquency, it is not necessarily the cause of: the problem. As a qualified psychologist and a teacher of'. 30 years experience, I claim i to speak with as much; authority as some who ponti- I -ficate on this problem. T have seen a number of children,
who do not learn to read adequately, and some have ended in the courts. However, as they received the same teaching as the vast imajority who do achieve, the methods of teaching are not at fault. Carefully controlled scientific investigation indicates that reading disability lis usually a combination of iseveral factors, of which intelligence, personality traits, social maladjustment, parental attitudes and home (conditions are prominent. If ‘these result in reading disiability, may they not also be ■responsible for delinquency? ;The reading problem is a symptom, not a cause, of! delinquency. — Yours etc.' J. W. TAYLOR. ’ September 26, 1975.
