Apricot crops damaged

(N.Z. Press Association)

DUNEDIN, Sept. 25

Roxburgh apricot growers] have suffered heavy losses | because of bad weather dur-! ing the last four days. One orchardist said 15 apri-, cot growers in the area had! lost all their crop. Some orchardists who did not have! an alternative crop were out of business. Snow fell to 500 ft in Roxburgh overnight, and was still falling this morning.

The smaller apricot growers in elevated areas of Roxburgh were “sitting ducks” this year because of the large increases in the price of oil. Some could not afford to burn oil for frost fighting because >f the prohibitive costs, and so took the risk of doing without. They are the worst iffected.
