Schoolboy stories sought
(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON. Sept. 5. A Papakura man wants to hear schoolboy anecdotes from St Stephen’s College old boys to help with a history of the school. Mr B. M. Old has just finished his M.A. thesis on the history of St Stephen’s, one of the oldest schools in New Zealand, but he needs schoolday reminscences to add to the book he hopes to publish next year.
St Stephen's was founded by a missionary in 1844 as a Maori girl’s school at Hicks Bay. It taught domestic skills and English before being moved to Auckland. One of the school’s former headmasters, Mr L. E. Lewis, of Tamahere, Hamilton, is helping with the book. He and Mr Old hope to spend the ChristmasNew Year holidays preparing the book for publication.
“There must have been incidents worth recording in St Stephen’s long history. We want to hear about them from former pupils,” Mr Old said.
