YEAR IN THE ANTARCTIC
A Christchurch meteorologist will spend next year at the Antarctic — the first time a New Zealander has taken over this type of work from Americans. Mr B. V. Maguire will be accompanied for four months bv another New Zealander, Mr R. Stainer. They will be responsible for most of the weather observing and recording at the new United States station. A month in California will be spent studying American equipment and procedure. Mr Maguire and Mr Stainer are due to fly to Antarctica from Christchurch on October 27. Miss E. Farkas, a meteorologist, will be at Scott Base as one of eight New Zealand women to work in the Antarctic this summer.
Three technicians responsible for atmospheric studies at Scott Base next year have already started researching! their specialised fields. Mr R. Jones, of Gore, Mr
C. Davis, of Wanganui, and (Mr C. Mills, of Auckland, will i leave for the Antarctic on ‘October 12.
