Pollution often dangerous

Reports from the Chief City Health Inspector to the health and general committee of the Christchurch City Council indicate that from l the week ending July 20 to (the week ending August 10 air pollution readings for Christchurch and surrounding suburbs exceeded the I maximum safety standard as! laid down by the World Health Organisation on a number of occasions. In the central city area the.' standard for smoke‘of 120 micrograms was exceeded four times. In the inner sub-' urban area the limit was! exceeded on six occasions, ( ; but in the outer suburban; (area the safety limit was ex-' ceeded only once.

At the two sites where smoke concentration is being measured a number of readings were more than 500 micrograms per cubic metre.
