Fertility rate

Sir, — In an otherwise fair and accurate report of my lecture “What’s Happening to the New Zealand Family?” at the Early Childhood Care and Development Convention yesterday you unfortunately, and no doubt inadvertently, misrepresent one of my remarks. I would be grateful if you would permit me to correct the record. I reported that the total fertility rate in New Zealand (the average number of live births to women aged 15-44) is declining sharply, that we can expect to reach a sub-replacement, level relatively soon, and that we should be considering the implications of this change now. I did not say, nor would I say, that the birth ■ rate is falling and we should do something about it (i.e. increase it). It may well be that when we have thought about the implications of this recent demographic revolution we may decide we can cope with the costs, and ; welcome the benefits. — Yours, etc., DAVID A. SWAIN. Lecturer in Sociology University of Waikato. August 28, 1975.
