Bus fumes
Sir, — Mr Taylor, general manager of the Christchurch Transport Board, stated in his reply to my letter of 13th August, that standing instructions were that all board vehicles stopping for more than two minutes should have their engines shut down. Why two minutes? Do the engines run for this period without emitting any fumes? Why not shut the engines down on arriving at Cathedral Square regardless of the time they are going to be there? Mr Taylor failed to mention if any fuel would be saved, maybe the board’s consultant could give an answer to this question. As to Mr Taylor’s suggestion that I supply him with specific facts, including times and vehicle numbers, may I suggest that he or the board’s inspectors should do this as I consider that this be part of their duties, not mine. Perhaps the Health Department could take air tests at ground level especially in the northwest part of the Square.— Yours etc., CHOKED OFF RATEPAYER August 26, 1975.
