Security Service

Sir, — Your correspondent “Civil Liberties”' writes a letter giving the most cogent and logical reasons against New Zealand’s maintaining a security service, summerising that “Shortly, the Security Intelligence Service, is a subversive organisation.” Hot on the heels of this letter follows one by Graham Rhind who not only supports such an organisation, but desires to have its leader given promotion. Would Mr Rhind expand on this, and justify why a spy, for after all, to me, the S.I.S. members are merely a bunch of petty spies, should be given any praise let alone promotion? — Yours, etc., JAMES J. DUNCAN. August 27, 1975. Trout fishing

Sir, — We are very sorry to read of “Spinner’s” attitude to the survey the Anglers Action Group is conducting. He himself must be bigoted if he considers there is any bias for one type of angling over another in the questionaire. All members of the committee and most of the members threadline. Many also flyfish. We are trying to ascertain by our survey, the opinions of all anglers who are interested in the long term management and conservation of their trout fishing, something we suggest the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society should have done before introducing the new regulations. Rather than boycott this survey, we hope “Spinner” will, with many others who call themselves threadliners, give us the benefit of his experience and opinion. — Yours, etc., R. M. HENSHAW, Chairman, Anglers Action Group. August 27, 1975.
