M.P.s’ perks criticised
(N.Z, Press Association) WELLINGTON. Labour and National Members of Parliament are “picking the taxpayer’s pocket” to help finance their election campaigns, a member of Social Credit’s political executive (Mr Thomas McLean) said. Mr McLean, said that M.P.s abused their free air travel privileges to make mass visits to marginal seats to canvass for partycandidates.
Both parties, he said, were ! flying in their “big guns”, i including Government Ministers, and Shadow Cabinet | spokesmen, to" marginal seat’s, and sending the bill to the taxpayer. He suggested that whenever M.P.s took advantage of free air travel rights they should have to justify their use.
“Only in exceptional circumstances should they be able 'to travel free for personal reasons, apart from between Wellington and their constituencies.”
