Hospitals more than full

Concern about overcrowding in the three main hospitals in Christchurch was expressed by the North Canterbury Hospital Board at their meeting yesterday. At Christchurch Hospital during July there were 1690 patients. The average bed-occupation rate was 370, 85.4 per cent. At Princess Margaret Hospital there were 1021 patients (96.3 per cent average) and at Burwood Hospital there were 555 patients (83.9 per cent average). Mr W. L. F. Utley said that where overcrowding occurred there was a possibility of infection spreading around a ward which would have a “catostrophic” affect. The medical superinten-dent-in-chief (Dr L. McH. Berry) told the board that staff agreed that they were able to cope wit the additional demand. They had risen to the occasion and taken it as a matter of course.
