Aust, market closes on firmer note
Australian stock exchanges closed on a generally firmer note in quiet trading yesterday.
The record profit result of Hooker, property developer, failed to impress the market and it was untraded. B.H.P. ended the day with
a modest 2c gain, while CSR rose 5c to 405 c. The Wales remained steady, but E.Z. Industries fell 5c to 215 c, and PekoWallsend retreated a similar amount to 310 c, in the wake of reduced profit results. Traders noted a continuing firmness among mining shares, with A.A.R. rising 10c to 120 c. C.R.A. recouped all of Tuesday’s loss while W.M.C., Robe River, A.M. and S., Bougainville, Hamersley, and Cudgen showed slight rises. Golds, however, were vulnerable. North B.H. dropped back from the 137 c peak it reached on Tuesday. SYDNEY Sales, Industrial.—Amatil, 141; Ampol Pet., 40; Ansett, 62; A.W.A., 95; Assoc.
